Artist's Statement Floris Flam Photo

I learned to sew as a child, but didn’t discover the world of art quilts until 1986. The world of fiber art quickly became my passion. My work is inspired by the geometry of the world around me, both natural and man-made. Some of my work is realistic, based on my own photographs; other work is abstract and improvisational. I enjoy using a wide range of fabric and quilting thread and have increasingly incorporated my own dyed and painted fabric and photographs printed on fabric in my quilts.
My design and technical skills have been enhanced through participation in workshops at the Quilt/Surface Design Symposium in Columbus, Ohio since 1991, where I studied design and technique with such teachers as Libby Lehman, Sue Benner, Caryl Bryer Fallert, Jane Sassaman, David Walker, and Emily Richardson. My studies and experience have given me a broad range of techniques on which I can draw to express the artistic demands of each work.
